Covering a major historical event can be a big challenge given limited time in social studies class. One teacher came up with a fun, interactive way to get students to cover lots of content in a short amount of time. Mrs. Hunscher-Young’s class at WIMA in Ypsilanti, Mich. went through a QR code scavenger hunt as part of their unit on the revolutionary war. Students rotated between stations to complete a variety of tasks, including making cartoons and creating video diary entries from a soldier’s perspective. With this method, students had to synthesize what they’d learned and show understanding in a variety of ways. By changing up the lesson in this way, students were more engaged and were able to demonstrate powerful learning in many formats.
