Utah Schools for the Blind and Deaf – Working to Create Standards-based Report Cards

Individual divisions within USDB are unpacking the current core curriculum into manageable steps. This is being done by teams of teachers in each division. We are creating rubrics for each state standard. This encourages the teachers to start using competency-based grading tools.

To create competency-based classrooms we need to create report cards that identify the learning objectives for each student and measures progress on those areas.  Therefore groups of teachers are working together to delineate the Utah State Core Curriculum into small steps that can be used to create online coursework for students.  Once these steps are created, our teachers must make them accessible for our student populations.  

We need to create the structure of competency-based learning if we expect teachers to utilize it.

Nothing to report yet since we have not fully implemented this reform.

We are hopeful that we will eliminate A,B,C grading with competency-based measures.  However we are aware that at the high school level this will need to be converted to a 4.0 scale for transcripts being considered for college entry.

• Competency-based report cards
• Rubrics based on the Utah State Core Curriculum
• Process map
• Examples of coursework
