Creating Common Definitions

Discussion Bubble 2

Before engaging in a lesson around racial equity and social justice, teachers must be prepared to provide students with common definitions and any relevant historical context. Having common terms will help teachers and students be able to more clearly communicate during discussion.

Students can have a copy of this glossary on their desks before engaging in discussion, definitions can be hung up on the wall as an anchor chart, or displayed on the board during discussion to keep everyone on the same page.

Teachers can either provide terms and definitions for your students or you can ask your students to generate a list of terms such as the list below.

Equality
Equity
Identity
Implicit Bias
Prejudice
Privilege
Race
Racism
Social Justice
Systemic Racism

A longer list with definitions can be found on the Race Equity Tools website.
