Encouraging Active Listening and Empathy

Educators can have students engage in reflection about their feelings on talking about race in the classroom before beginning a whole class discussion on race.

Facing History has a 50 minute lesson that outlines one possible way to discuss the emotions that may arise when discussing race.

You may also want to have students complete a survey chart before engaging them in conversations around race. Sample questions to ask include:

How would you define [use terms you’ll feature in your discussion like race or privilege]?
What emotions do you have when talking about race in the classroom?
What strengths could you bring to a conversation on racial equity and social justice?
What other conversations have you had around racial equity and social justice in school?
Do you have concerns about discussing racial equity or social justice in our class? How can I help?
Are there specific topics related to racial equity and social justice you would like our class to discuss?
