Consider thinking about your non-negotiables when engaging in a critical conversation with students. What type of language will not be allowed in the classroom? What behavior is not okay?

Learning for Justice (2019) calls this practice “drawing a red line” and suggests explaining to students where your “red lines” are and why. If you have to step in during discussion, they offer an example of a direct and simple explanation—

“The humanity of other people is not up for debate in this classroom”

Examples of non-negotiables

Name-calling
Bullying
Speaking on behalf of all people of a specific identity
Making generalizations about all people of a certain identity (ex: all Christians/Muslims)

Activity

Create an interactive journal to record learning during the process.
Use a simple tool like google slides or google sheets.
