Collaborating with Colleagues and Developing a Schoolwide Approach

Module 6 Graphic

Creating a school-wide approach to engaging in conversations about race is a powerful way to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. When educators come together to share ideas, resources, and experiences, it creates a community of practice that can significantly impact student learning and promote a culture of equity and inclusion.

As you begin incorporating Socratic circles into your classroom, sharing your experiences with colleagues will provide support that can lead to sustaining and continuously improving your facilitation of race conversations in the classroom. As a teacher, you can take a leadership role in building a community of practice centered around Socratic circles and conversations about race.

Here are a few examples of how you can initiate and nurture this collaborative environment:

Establish a Professional Learning Community (PLC)

Identify a group of like-minded educators who are interested in exploring conversations about race and using Socratic circles in their classrooms. This PLC can meet regularly to share promising practices, discuss challenges, and collaborate on strategies for fostering meaningful dialogue. Consider creating a shared digital space, such as a dedicated online forum or a collaborative document, where educators can exchange ideas and resources.

Lead Professional Development Sessions

Offer to lead professional development sessions within your school or district, focusing on the use of Socratic circles and fostering conversations about race. Share your experiences, demonstrate effective strategies, and provide practical examples to inspire and support your colleagues. Encourage participants to reflect on their own practices and engage in discussions about how they can incorporate these approaches into their classrooms.

Collaborative Lesson Planning

Work with your colleagues to develop lesson plans that integrate Socratic circles and discussions on race across various subject areas and grade levels. By collaborating, you can leverage the collective expertise and diverse perspectives within your school community to create comprehensive and culturally responsive learning experiences for students.

Engage in Peer Observations and Feedback

Encourage teachers to observe and provide feedback to one another as they implement Socratic circles and conversations about race in their classrooms. This practice promotes continuous improvement and offers an opportunity to learn from one another’s successes and challenges. Through peer observations, educators can refine their instructional strategies and cultivate a school-wide culture of support and collaboration.

Remember, building a community of practice takes time and effort. It requires a shared commitment to growth, openness, and a willingness to learn from one another. By taking the lead and actively engaging with your colleagues, you can create a collaborative environment where educators collectively work towards fostering meaningful conversations about race and developing culturally responsive classrooms.

In the next section, we will explore strategies for engaging parents and other school community members in supporting conversations about race, further strengthening the inclusive learning environment we strive to create.
