As you build a use case and identify interoperable solutions, it is important to specify parameters that will enable you to follow through on implementation. To do this, it is important to align your goals for this project with your district’s vision for student outcomes.
SMARTIE Goals
Now, write some goals that situate the current data interoperability project within the district’s vision and resources for student outcomes. Consider writing goals for a number of different aspects that affect your district’s vision for student outcomes. For instance, you may wish to write goals that relate to student academic success, equity, teacher practice, or organizational support.
SMARTIE is an acronym that describes various characteristics of the goal. SMART stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound, Inclusive, Equitable. It was derived from the SMART goals and expanded by The Management Center to approach goal setting with a center on Inclusion and Equity. Learn more about SMARTIE goals here.
Vision
IGNITE Questions
First, answer these questions about your district’s vision around student outcomes:
In five years, what equitable outcomes do you hope to see for all of your diverse learners?
How do these outcomes align with those described by educators, students, and parents?
How do these outcomes align with the data interoperability use case your district is exploring?
SMARTIE Goals Template
Use this template to write a number of different SMARTIE goals that will help you establish parameters for your data interoperability work.
Specific: Write a goal that you would like to attain through your data interoperability work. Be specific! Make sure it is embedded within the district’s vision for student outcomes.
Measurable: What measures will you use to determine whether you meet your goal? How will you know it when you see it? How will you know you’re on track?
Attainable: How do you know you can accomplish this goal through your data interoperability work? Why will this solution support this goal? What resources, personnel, and skills will be required—and do those exist in your district?
Relevant: Return to the Vision and Resources section of this document. Clearly articulate how this data interoperability project and this particular goal align with the district’s vision and resources.
Time-Bound: When can you achieve this goal? How do you know you can hit this target? Specify the target date for completion and milepost dates for various work along the way. Be realistic and plan for possible setbacks.
Inclusive: When determining this goal, set the conditions for sharing power, collective policymaking, and data-informed decision-making with traditionally marginalized people.
Equitable: Include elements of fairness and justice that addresses systemic inequity and oppression.
