Immersive Storytelling to Inspire Action for a Better World

October 9, 2018 | By

This year on the Global Day of Action, over a million people from around the world mobilized to show how they are working to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create a better world for all. Coinciding with the opening session of the UN General Assembly, the Global Day of Action provided a unique opportunity to amplify local actions and bring them to the attention of world leaders.

To mark the day, the MY World 360° team joined our partners at Oculus and the SDG Action Campaign at the UN Headquarters in New York City to highlight how youth are using immersive storytelling to share their perspectives and advance positive action toward the SDGs.

With delegates from 193 countries descending on the UN Headquarters, Dimitri Moore of Digital Promise Global and Christina Jackson of Oculus took to the stage at the SDG Media Zone to announce the first MY World 360° playlist. Along with the release of youth-produced media from Brazil, Germany, and the United States, they shared the story of a group of students from Germany and Kenya who created an immersive story on a goal that matters deeply to them—SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

We then hosted a pop-up screening of youth media from MY World 360° in the main lobby of the UN Headquarters. Delegates were able to choose from six immersive stories featured on the first MY World 360° playlist. They could put on a headset and be transported into the world of the young filmmakers–from an animated undersea story about waste on the coastlines of Texas in the United States, to a celebration of Francisca, a woman who inspires everyone around her through her dedication to the community of Terra do Sol, Brazil, located in the surroundings of a landfill.

The MY World 360° team would like to offer a big congratulations to all the intrepid youth and educators who joined in the early months of the MY World 360° Challenge. With two years of experience in the 360 Filmmakers Challenge, we were confident that young people would create powerful stories and inspire new thinking about the potential of 360° media. What resulted exceeded all our expectations and charted the way as we embark on more MY World 360° adventures in the year ahead.
