Our work with the Educator Cohort highlighted a critical need: Before districts can integrate specialized reading AI, they need to understand the basics of AI literacy. Educators emphasized that foundational AI literacy skills and responsible use guidance were essential starting points for responsible adoption.
This groundwork is important as the U-GAIN Reading project team explores how generative AI (GenAI), grounded in the Science of Reading, can personalize and accelerate reading development. By addressing these broad institutional needs first, we support the future use of reading-specific resources from U-GAIN Reading.
This first iteration of the Educator Resource Toolkit delivers practical guidance through a set of resource briefs and district use cases. These resources share essential AI literacy and responsible use guidelines to support educators’ use of AI:
With this groundwork complete, the U-GAIN Reading team and Educator Cohort is now planning to narrow its focus. Our next phase of resource development will explore specialized knowledge on how GenAI can be leveraged in the classroom to transform the reading experience for young learners.
Specifically, we’ll look at how GenAI can be used by educators to:
These initial resources lay the groundwork for the next phase of our work focused on transforming the reading experience for young learners through responsible AI implementation.
