Key Ideas

  • The U-GAIN Reading Educator Toolkit provides resources and guidance for school leaders and practitioners exploring AI for reading technology.
  • These initial resources, co-designed with educators, focus on building foundational AI literacy and establishing guidance and guardrails for teachers and reading specialists.
  • These resources set the stage for the next phase: exploring how generative AI can personalize and accelerate reading development for learners.
In case you missed it, the U-GAIN Reading Educator Resource Toolkit recently launched. Co-developed with our National Leadership Educator Cohort, the toolkit offers a set of resources designed to help school leaders and practitioners navigate artificial intelligence (AI) in an educational landscape. It translates high-level recommendations into clear, actionable resources and guidance on technology for reading, with a special focus on English learners and developing readers in grades 1-3.

Setting the Foundation: Why AI Literacy Matters

Our work with the Educator Cohort highlighted a critical need: Before districts can integrate specialized reading AI, they need to understand the basics of AI literacy. Educators emphasized that foundational AI literacy skills and responsible use guidance were essential starting points for responsible adoption.

This groundwork is important as the U-GAIN Reading project team explores how generative AI (GenAI), grounded in the Science of Reading, can personalize and accelerate reading development. By addressing these broad institutional needs first, we support the future use of reading-specific resources from U-GAIN Reading.

Practical Resources for Responsible AI Adoption

This first iteration of the Educator Resource Toolkit delivers practical guidance through a set of resource briefs and district use cases. These resources share essential AI literacy and responsible use guidelines to support educators’ use of AI:

  • Four resource briefs cover topics including AI literacy basics, creating responsible AI use guidance, effective classroom practices with AI, and correcting common misconceptions about AI.
  • Five district use cases provide real-world examples of operationalizing AI, including building collaborative networks, developing cross-functional procurement teams, tailoring professional learning, and establishing accountability systems.

Transforming Reading Instruction

With this groundwork complete, the U-GAIN Reading team and Educator Cohort is now planning to narrow its focus. Our next phase of resource development will explore specialized knowledge on how GenAI can be leveraged in the classroom to transform the reading experience for young learners.

Specifically, we’ll look at how GenAI can be used by educators to:

  • Support students as they practice reading.
  • Match content to student interests and strengths.
  • Enable dialogue about the meaning of content.
  • Adapt to a student’s progress and needs.

These initial resources lay the groundwork for the next phase of our work focused on transforming the reading experience for young learners through responsible AI implementation.
