Key Ideas

  • Global digital collaboration transforms passive device access into active global citizenship, allowing students to bridge immense geographic divides and engage in deep, cross-cultural dialogues about identity, equity, and leadership.
  • Sustainable international partnerships rely on intentional, educator-first collaboration, demonstrating that deep teacher-to-teacher alignment—both virtually and in person—is a critical prerequisite for high-impact student experiences.
  • Leveraging technology for digital storytelling elevates student voice and agency, shifting the purpose of 1:1 devices from routine consumption to active creation, critical thinking, and mutual empathy.
Technology’s greatest potential lies in connecting people. When students are provided with reliable access to digital tools, the walls of their classrooms expand, allowing them to engage with the world in transformative ways.

This vision is coming to life through a unique collaboration between Rahway High School—a Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS) in New Jersey—and Crestway High School in South Africa. Through the Voices Across Borders (VAB): Empowering Future Scholars as Global Leaders initiative, in partnership with the Rutgers Future Scholars Program and Rutgers Graduate School of Education, students across continents are bridging digital equity to global citizenship.

“Voices Across Borders was founded on the belief that geography should never limit opportunity, understanding, or connection. When students are given the tools to share their stories, listen with empathy, and learn from one another across cultures, they begin to see themselves not only as members of their local communities, but as leaders with the power to shape our global future.”

Building Bridges Through Digital Collaboration

Throughout the 2025-26 school year, Rahway and Crestway students have been bridging an 8,000-mile gap through virtual engagement exchanges online and through the use of various applications (i.e., zoom, google classroom, classdojo). Supported by the digital tools, connectivity, and innovative learning frameworks fostered by the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, Rahway students have been able to seamlessly connect with their South African peers.

Using their devices as a bridge to global collaboration, students explored complex themes including: global identity and culture, education and equity, youth leadership, and community impact. By using digital storytelling to share lived experiences and listen to others, the VAB initiative builds empathy, global awareness, and critical thinking in real time.

Crestway High School Principal Cheryl Jacobs recently noted that this program “reflects our commitment to preparing learners for a rapidly changing, interconnected world. The opportunity to engage with peers across continents allows our learners to broaden their perspectives, develop critical thinking skills, and build meaningful global connections.”

Deepening the Connection: From Screen to Real Life

While technology has laid the foundation for this relationship, human connection remains at the heart of the initiative. This summer (2026), a team of educators from Rutgers Future Scholars and Rahway Public Schools traveled to South Africa to meet with Crestway learners and staff.

During the visit, Crestway learners responded to written journal reflections shared by their peers in the United States, offering thoughtful perspectives on identity, culture, leadership, and community. They also joined the program’s new online collaboration platform, where students will continue exchanging ideas, reflecting on one another’s experiences, and engaging in ongoing dialogue throughout the academic year. Together, these digital experiences demonstrate how technology can extend learning beyond the classroom, transforming individual reflections into meaningful global conversations.

This in-person visit marks the official launch of the collaboration’s next phase. By sitting in the same room and co-planning, the staff and educators worked to deepen relationships, laying a robust pedagogical foundation for the upcoming school year. It is a brilliant example of how physical and digital worlds can blend to create a sustainable, high-impact learning experience.

A Blueprint for Global Innovation: What District and School Leaders Can Learn

For district and school leaders, the partnership offers a powerful blueprint for what is possible when schools intentionally leverage technology for global learning. Here are a few key takeaways to consider for your own districts:

  • Leverage Technology as a Passport. Build upon your current technology foundation and encourage educators to facilitate meaningful, cross-cultural connections that challenge students’ local assumptions.
  • Empower Student Voice Through Digital Storytelling. Center collaborative projects around identity, narrative development, and social change. Use digital tools for active creation and expression, rather than passive consumption.
  • Invest in Educator Collaboration First. Transformative student experiences require deep, intentional collaboration among teachers. Support your staff to build cross-border partnerships.
  • Rethink Classroom Boundaries. Empower staff to seek out secure, international partnerships that align with their curriculum goals.
