From 1993 to the early 2000’s, Kristi Franz’s second-grade students studied a local pond in their Pullman, WA hometown. Each year, students documented their observations with pictures and descriptions, over time showing numerous deteriorations in the pond environment. The class began communicating with classrooms around the world through the iEARN network, sharing photos and stories about changes in the water bodies near their homes. These global peers encouraged Kristi’s students to take action to save the pond, and in 1998, the students presented to the Pullman City Council and successfully convinced the Council to embark on a restoration project.
