Students at the
Learning Studio at Fallingbrook Middle School in Mississauga, ON, Canada used the
Problem Tree to better understand issues of mental health at their school. The Problem Tree exercise asks students to illustrate a tree in which the trunk represents a problem, the roots represent its causes, and the branches represent its effects. The project helped students think critically about the ways in which a mental health problem may manifest and what the underlying causes could be.
After completing the exercise, students decided to create a multimedia campaign to shed light on the state of mental health of peers at their school. By pairing video testimonials with results from a survey they conducted among students, they designed a poster campaign illustrating how students’ emotional experience may differ from their outward appearance.
