Impact Story: OpenSciEd Research Community (Carnegie Corporation of New York)

Key Outcome

Digital Promise researchers built an active community of practitioners, researchers, and innovators dedicated to improving science education for K-12 learners.

Improving Science Education Through Community

OpenSciEd is a set of free, publicly available science materials for K-12 education that engage students in practice-based science. OpenSciEd’s design makes it uniquely positioned to advance science education research and innovation. Digital Promise brought together a community of researchers, practitioners, and innovators to define a research agenda for OpenSciEd to address knowledge gaps and promote equity in science education.

This diverse community elevated the needs of practitioners to the broader community, supported partnerships and early-stage research through seed funding grants, promoted research in K-12 science education, and provided learning opportunities for community members.

Empowering Ongoing Innovation

Through this project, we awarded 13 seed funding grants that helped researchers establish partnerships, develop frameworks, and identify new future research directions. We also published several resources—including a logic model, research agenda, two research syntheses, and an analysis of practitioner needs— to support ongoing research on ways OpenSciEd can improve science education.
