Joseph Filiplic is a computer science and social studies teacher at JJ Bowlen Catholic Junior High School in Edmonton, Alberta.
Joseph has been teaching for over 15 years. He started his journey in a technology classroom where he got to put his love for technology to good use by challenging his students to use their technical knowledge outside of the classroom. Having taught everything and anything from kindergarten through grade 12, and computer classes for senior citizens, Joseph believes in the power of using technology to bridge the learning gap often found in classrooms and beyond.
“A strategy I believe in is to ‘just try it out.’ Often great, successful lessons and learning happen from teachers willing to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Today’s mistakes are tomorrow’s opportunities and now is a great time to be alive. The ‘just try it out’ and seeing what happens is true authentic learning. Students need to learn to adapt to an ever-changing environment and will strive if they have models who practice that exact element. When the educator of the class steps outside of their comfort zone, the class is able to learn together as the experience often levels the playing field and reduces the many pressures our students feel on a regular basis.”
