Enhanced social-emotional learning opportunities: The Capital School District has introduced and enhanced social-emotional learning opportunities over the past few years to help students address challenges and trauma in an equity-conscious manner. SEL curricula have been employed with the associated professional development across all grade levels. Training on restorative practices is an ongoing area of focus. Additional LCSWs, nurses, school counselors, and “floating” substitute teachers were hired to address the increased student needs.
Dedication to equity: Capital consistently drives equity by conducting GIEP tests on all students. This has significantly changed/improved the profile of students who participate in gifted programming and ultimately enroll in AP classes
Partnership with Rowan University: The district has contracted with Rowan University through their Partnership for Educational Equity and Research (PEER) program to examine district data through an equity lens, educate our stakeholders, and build an equity-based strategic plan. The district’s intimate work with Rowan University to uncover levels of equity on all fronts is a landmark program that is advancing excellence for all. The district is getting an improved look at academics, attendance, discipline, staffing, and outcomes. The analyses are at the district, school, and grade levels. Learnings will be incorporated into Capital’s ten-year strategic plan (2023-2033).
