Advancing personalized learning initiatives across the district: CMS’s Personalized Learning schools are providing multiple pathways based on students’ needs, interests, and pace of mastery. The cornerstone of the Personalized Learning philosophy is the Whole Child principle, focusing on maximizing student potential and building students’ ownership of their learning.
Creating computer science options for students: CMS offers computer science as an elective in all K-8 schools, and introduced two partial magnet elementary programs in 2016 and opened a fully immersive computer science magnet elementary school in 2017 with Code to the Future.
Building community engagement for digital inclusion in Mecklenburg County: A founding member of a Digital Inclusion Alliance, CMS partners with nonprofits, elected officials, and business and civic leaders to advocate for broadband access so all students have an opportunity to learn beyond the school day. In 2017, the Sprint 1 Million Project granted 20,000 wifi hotspots to CMS over a five-year period.
