Learn from this district about:
Providing a free STEM master’s degree for teachers: In conjunction with Catawba College, Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS) has developed a 33-semester-hour master’s degree program that focuses on STEM education. The degree is provided free of charge to a cohort of teachers every year.
Bringing STEM education to the community: RSS hosts community events highlighting innovative STEM projects from the classroom and operates the STEM Mobile Exploration Lab Bus, a mobile lab equipped with personal devices, digital microscopes, an interactive whiteboard, and science probeware, which brings immersive science, technology, engineering, and math experiences to students.
Building an innovation center: RSS operates a unique innovation center called Horizons Unlimited, one of the few supplemental education centers in the country that focuses on STEM.
Providing innovation spaces to aid in district procurement: The Rowan-Salisbury School’s Educators’ Playground is a space that encourages educators to “play” and explore the hottest trends in Ed-tech tools. The playground provides educators with an opportunity to learn about new Ed-tech tools before purchasing them within their classroom and schools.
Creating personalized resources to inspire and guide professional development: Through the creation and implementation of a new district-wide iBook, all staff members have access to common language and expectations. The eight chapter iBook covers many topics of instructional importance and was completely written by RSS staff. Within each chapter are videos of the RSS educators as exemplars in areas like blended learning, problem-based learning, guided instruction and many more.
