Artificial Intelligence in Education – Digital Promise

Artificial Intelligence in Education

Digital Promise prioritizes a human-centered approach to artificial intelligence in education–working across research, edtech, and practice–to augment learning.

At Digital Promise, we believe artificial intelligence holds immense promise to help us solve the most complex and persistent challenges in education—from fostering powerful learning to preparing every student for an ever-changing world. Our human-centered approach ensures that AI serves as a powerful tool to augment, rather than replace, the roles of teachers and learners. Through our community-engaged research, our collaborative work with school districts and edtech developers, and national R&D centers, we are leading the charge to leverage AI's potential for all learners.

What We're Working On

The Need for AI Literacy

What is AI Literacy?

AI literacy is the knowledge and skills that enable humans to critically understand, evaluate, and use AI systems and tools to safely and ethically participate in an increasingly digital world.

Digital Promise’s AI Literacy Framework emphasizes that understanding and evaluating AI are critical to making informed decisions about if and how to use AI in learning environments.

Building Capacity for the Field

We help the education field build capacity to implement AI safely, equitably, and meaningfully at the systems level by engaging in national research partnerships and collaborations with practitioners.

“Working through artificial intelligence as part of the [Digital Promise] work group has given us great opportunities in our district to be metacognitive about how we can improve what we’re doing to make it even more valuable for our students.”

Mary Catherine Reljac, Superintendent, Fox Chapel Area School District (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Designing Powerful Learning EdTech

AI-powered edtech must be designed responsibly if all learners and educators are to benefit from its innovation.

Digital Promise combines research, thought partnership, and feedback from experts across the field to develop resources that highlight actionable, evidence-based insights for practitioners and product designers. Our resources support developers and those who purchase and use AI for learning to make informed decisions about AI-powered edtech tools.
