What should AI’s role be in teaching and learning? After conducting a thorough literature review, the Digital Promise team spoke with more than 59 experts across educational technology sectors, including developers, designers, investors, researchers, and practitioners. This work informs our Framework for Powerful Learning with Emerging Technology, which articulates a vision for the role of AI and emerging technology-enabled tools within learning environments.
The framework is grounded in three principles:

For each principle, the framework provides practices (guidelines for incorporating the principle) and strategies (actionable steps for product design and implementation). Apply these mutually reinforcing recommendations across principles to serve learners more equitably.
We’re hosting a three-part webinar series to dive into each of the principles with expert practitioners, researchers, and developers. Register for the second session on learner-centered education technology on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 9:30 a.m. PT/12:30 p.m. ET.
Excellence in the three principles is exemplified by the products listed below. Each product spotlight includes a description about what the product does, how it embodies the concepts and practices within the principle, and why applying the principle has been critical for the product’s success. Check out the spotlights for real-world lessons for developing emerging technology products.
These product spotlights are not an endorsement of products or their efficacy. The spotlights are intended to help developers understand what each principle looks like in practice.
