Mia Gittlen

Mia Gittlen is an ELA and Minecraft teacher at Union Middle School in San Jose, California.

Mia Gittlen’s journey as an educator began as a student activist growing up in Berkeley, California. School is where she first experienced a personalized pathway, where she discovered her passion for learning, and where she found her voice. Throughout her career as a middle and high school English and social studies teacher as well as a teacher on special assignment, she has sought ways to amplify student voice and offer choice. In her classroom, Mia emphasizes curiosity, creativity, community, and compassion.

Mia on Powerful Learning:

What book has influenced your thinking on powerful teaching and learning?

Being the Change by Sara K. Ahmed helped me think deeply about how to intentionally create space for students to explore identity and social issues throughout the year. Intention: Critical Creativity in the Classroom by Amy Burvall and and Dan Ryder is filled with quick creative routines that can easily be implemented in the classroom. The Art of Coaching Teams by Elena Aguilar helps me reflect on my own practice as well as discuss teaching and learning with colleagues with the goal of transforming and innovating teaching and learning.”
