National Principals Month 2023

After working at Harriet Tubman for 10 years as a building administrator, Zondra Howard-Cross assumed the role of principal in Fall 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. It was also the first year of implementing the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, which meant she had to implement the program during a mostly virtual/hybrid school year full of stops and starts. Despite those challenges, Ms. Howard-Cross has been the model for excellence regarding the program, as she has embraced the tenets of Verizon Innovative Learning Schools to use technology to enhance the lessons in her middle school. Now in the fourth year of the program, she works with her coach to continue to innovate regarding the program, and it has become ingrained in the work in the building.

Under Keyona Powell’s guidance, our school has experienced remarkable positive transformation. Her visionary approach to education has led to the implementation of innovative teaching methods, fostering an environment of continuous learning and growth. Dr. Powell’s commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity has empowered students and staff to embrace their unique identities. What truly sets Dr. Powell apart is her dedication to the holistic development of students. Dr. Powell has created a safe space where students can thrive academically and personally. Her open-door policy and genuine concern for each student’s success have left an indelible mark on the lives of those under her guidance. Furthermore, Dr. Powell’s exemplary teamwork and collaboration have strengthened the bond between teachers, parents, and the community.
