Providing a free STEM master’s degree for teachers: In conjunction with Catawba College, Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS) has developed a 33-semester-hour master’s degree program that focuses on STEM education. The degree is provided free of charge to a cohort of teachers every year.
Bringing STEM education to the community: RSS hosts community events highlighting innovative STEM projects from the classroom and operates the STEM Mobile Exploration Lab Bus, a mobile lab equipped with personal devices, digital microscopes, an interactive whiteboard, and science probeware, which brings immersive science, technology, engineering, and math experiences to students.
Building an innovation center: RSS operates a unique innovation center called Horizons Unlimited, one of the few supplemental education centers in the country that focuses on STEM.
Creating hubs of internet connectivity: Since some students do not have Internet connectivity at home, the district recognized the need to partner with members of the community to open hot spots where students can access the Internet to read and complete homework.
