About

Digital Promise Global’s study tour to Montevideo, Uruguay will focus on the themes of tech-enabled and future-forward learning, including digital pedagogy; integration of AI into classrooms; and equitable access to digital technology, tools, and classes. This study tour will be hosted by Ceibal, Uruguay's digital technology center for education innovation. During the four days of programming, participants will attend school site visits and join facilitated activities to learn about new practices focused on pedagogy, teacher training, leadership, and equity related to AI and emerging technologies.

About the Host Organization

Ceibal promotes the integration of technology to improve learning and foster innovation, inclusion, and personal growth and is widely recognized as a global leader in digital transformation in education. Upon its creation in 2007, Ceibal was tasked with deploying devices, establishing internet connectivity in schools, and creating content platforms and learning management systems. Having achieved all of this, Uruguay was the most prepared country in the world when COVID forced learning to go online. Since then, Ceibal has continued to lead the country’s strategy for digital transformation in education including the training of teachers in pedagogical practices; creation of education programs leveraging technology; and the use of data for evidence-based decision making.

Study Tour Themes

- Equitable Access to Digital Learning: We will examine how Uruguay has worked toward equitable access to digital learning for all (both inside and outside of the classroom) and see lessons that can be adapted by others.

- Technology and Pedagogy: Ceibal has been working nationally to bring high-impact pedagogical practices leveraging technology to both rural and urban classrooms. We will learn about these practices and see them through a series of school visits. Importantly, we will explore how Ceibal is helping to integrate AI into classrooms.

- Leadership for Technology: What skills do leaders need to successfully manage technology projects and how can they ensure teachers are receiving proper guidance and training? Ceibal has been devoted to answering these questions and we will learn from their experts, as well as from education leaders across Uruguay.

Dates

The study tour will take place from May 5 to May 8. Participants should arrive in Montevideo by Sunday, May 4 and plan to leave no earlier than Friday, May 9. Events will end Thursday, May 8 in the evening.

Why Attend?

International study tours not only provide district and school leaders a unique opportunity to learn first-hand from other educational contexts, but they also enable teams to learn from their fellow participants as they come together to study and ultimately apply learning within their own systems. These types of experiences serve to validate the work already happening in districts and schools, as well as to inspire new perspectives and approaches. To see an example of the outcomes from previous international study tours organized by Digital Promise, see this report from a 2022 trip to Australia focused on social emotional learning or this story on outcomes from a fall 2024 visit to Helsinki, Finland focused on whole child development.
